September 16, 2026, 97, Goldsboro – Mattie Virginia Edmundson Wells Hudson answered the Master’s call and went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Somerset Court in Goldsboro.
Virginia was born February 24, 1929, in Wayne County to the late Larry Drew Edmundson and Maggie Mckeel Edmundson. She Retired as a seamstress for R.G. Barry Manufacturing Co. in Goldsboro., where her capable hands and strong work ethic served her well.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Haywood Wells Sr. and Preston B. Hudson Jr.
A woman of strong Christian faith, Virginia was a member of New Hope Church of God. Her church and her relationship with the Lord were important parts of her life, and the faith by which she lived provided strength and guidance throughout her many years.
Virginia found some of life’s greatest pleasures in the simple things, especially when they involved the people she loved. Family was at the center of her world. She treasured trips to the beach with her grandchildren and the memories they made together. She enjoyed games and crossword puzzles and had a special love for flowers and working outdoors. Virginia took great pride in her yard and wasn’t afraid to get outside and mow her own grass. She loved to watch the Cubs play baseball.
Fishing held a particularly special place in her heart, especially when she could share it with her grandchildren. She could bait a hook with the best of them and was always ready to spend time by the water. Those fishing trips, beach outings, family gatherings, and ordinary days spent together became the moments that meant the most.
Virginia had a passion for sewing and crochet. She took great pride in crocheting hats for children and others who were receiving cancer treatments, and scarves for the needy to stay warm with.
A service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held Monday, September 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. by the graveside at Wayne Memorial Park, with Pastor Charlie Asby officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:50 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro prior to the graveside service.
Virginia is survived by her children, William Haywood “Buster” Wells Jr. and wife, Lisa, Roger Earl Wells and fiancé Maria Hewitt, Susan Wells Jones and husband, Jimmie, Wilma Wells Brown and husband, Robert, and Nancy Wells Autry.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jimmie Jones Jr. and wife, Kristene, Christopher Jones, Frankie Shingleton and wife, Sara, Joy Lindsey and husband, John, Heather Wells, Tammy Howell Walker, Amanda Howell Pope and husband, Johnny, and Ashley Howell Capri and husband, Larry.
Her surviving great-grandchildren are Jared Jones and wife, Michelle, Mark Salisbury, Sami Norcross and husband, Brian, Ramie Shingleton, Barrett Shingleton, Kayla Taylor, Brandon Kamer, Christiana Taylor, Tyrone Fields, Payton Lindsay, Kaityln Pope, Mason Pope, Kaden Sheets, Gage Sheets, Lacy Capri, Landon Capri, Piper Capri, and Paisley Capri. She is also survived by her great-great-grandchildren, Lyric Taylor and Melody Taylor, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Virginia was preceded in death by her grandson, William P. “Billy” Wells; son-in-law, Tommy Autry; brothers, Wilbert Edmundson, William Edmundson, Paul Edmundson, and Ray Edmundson; and sisters, May Owen and Lois Mckeel.
Virginia was blessed with 97 years of life—years filled with faith, hard work, family, and countless memories. Her family will remember the woman who loved her Lord, tended her flowers and yard, enjoyed the beach, baited fishing hooks alongside her grandchildren, and found her greatest happiness simply being surrounded by those she loved. Though her earthly journey has ended, the lessons she taught, the love she gave, and the memories she created will remain with her family for generations to come.
