June 24, 2026, 89, Goldsboro – Joy Smith Pate, 89, of S. Oleander Avenue, went to be with the Lord and Savior June 24, 2026 following many years of dementia.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Thomas A. Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
She was born May 30th 1937 in Dunn, NC to the late A.L. Smith and Ruby Lee Smith.
Joy was a dedicated member of the Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church most of her life and will be remembered for her generosity, faith, services and loyalty. She was a doting wife, loving mother of five, dependable employee, active church member and community volunteer.
She is survived by five daughters, Pam Pate Morgan of Spartanburg, SC; Jo Ann Pate and husband, David Coghill of Goldsboro; Jackie Pate Monts de Oca and husband, Bill Monts de Oca of Bartow, FL; June Pate Bryan of Goldsboro and Caroline Pate-Buchanan of Morehead City, NC; three brothers, Thomas A. Smith of Tampa, FL; Harry L. Smith and Richard G. Smith of Goldsboro; three granddaughters, Amanda M. Smith and husband, Shaun Smith of Spartanburg, SC; Chelsea L. Fanelli and husband, Mike Fanelli of Highlands Ranch, CO and Danielle Pate McBarron of Hubert, NC; three great grand-children, several nephews and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Earl Pate; two grandsons, Sean Michael Morgan and Zachary Thomas McBarron and son-in-law, Mike Bryan.
Joy passed the same way she lived, quietly, diligently, comfortably, filled with the Holy Spirit and without apology. A special thank you to Brandy Fleece of Goldsboro, her long term loving caregiver and daily companion.
