MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The University of Mount Olive women’s soccer team turned in a strong defensive performance Saturday afternoon, battling UNC Pembroke to a 0-0 draw at Amon Field.
The Trojans moved to 1-2-1 overall following the hard-fought result, holding an advantage in offensive opportunities while keeping the Braves off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes.
Mount Olive finished with a 10-6 advantage in total shots, including six shots on goal. Yaneli Sanchez and Charlotte Benson led the Trojan attack with three shots apiece, with Sanchez placing two attempts on goal.
Emma O’Rourke, Madyson Brown and Elie Lopez also registered shots on goal for Mount Olive.
After a scoreless opening half, the Trojans increased the offensive pressure over the final 45 minutes. Mount Olive outshot UNC Pembroke 8-3 in the second half, but neither side was able to break through for the deciding goal.
Goalkeeper Anais Coyne anchored the Mount Olive defense, recording four saves and earning her second shutout of the season.
UNC Pembroke generated opportunities from set pieces, holding a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Trojan defense repeatedly turned away the Braves’ chances to preserve the clean sheet and secure the draw.
Mount Olive will look to build on the performance when the Trojans travel to face Belmont Abbey on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m. in Belmont.
