June 22, 2026, 78, Grantham – Woodrow “Woody” Grant Stevens, age 78, passed away Monday, June 22, 2026, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Woodrow Wilson Stevens and Mary Helen Grant Stevens. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Everette Stevens and David Stevens, sisters, Virginia Fields, Annette Stuart and Barbara Grice, three grandchildren, Benjamin Kelsey, David Kelsey and Andrew Kelsey and one great grandchild, Richard Clutter.
Woody retired from the U.S. Army as an Engineer Technician and then began working as the maintenance mechanic for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Woody served as a Bishop, Counselor to the Bishop, Ward and State Clerk, Youth Leader and a Boy Scout Leader.
A service to celebrate the life of Woody will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Goldsboro with Bishop Mark Corbett officiating. Committal service with full military honors will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 2:00pm at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will greet friends Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
Woody is survived by his wife, Sally Capps Stevens; a son, James Michael Stevens; a daughter, Carol (David) Kelsey; brothers, Charles (Lynn) Stevens, Jerry (Joyce) Stevens, Wilson (Michelle) Stevens; a sister, Libby (Mike) Hooks; a sister in law, Janie Stevens and a brother in law, Donald Grice; his grandchildren, Renee (Jason) Clutter, Samuel Kelsey, Nathan (Rosalynn) Kelsey, Talea (Jared) Turner; his great grandchildren, Scarlett Clutter, Lucinda Kelsey, Woodrow Kelsey, Eleanor Kelsey, Jared Turner, Izabella Turner and Elijah Turner; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
