WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — A Goldsboro man has been arrested in connection with a fraud investigation involving a phone scam that targeted a Wayne County resident.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with the agency’s Investigations Division began looking into the case on February 25, 2026, after a victim reported being contacted by individuals claiming to represent Wells Fargo.
Authorities said the suspects used false pretenses to convince the victim to place cash inside a mailbox, where it was later collected. The victim was also instructed to wire money electronically to an account controlled by the offender.
Following an investigation, detectives identified 29-year-old Dashun McKinnon of Goldsboro as a suspect.
On April 16, 2026, McKinnon was taken into custody and charged with three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. He was booked into the Wayne County Jail and placed under a $90,000 secured bond.
Officials are reminding residents to be cautious of unsolicited phone calls requesting money or personal financial information and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a financial institution.
