First Place in the Quad County 3-A on the Line as Aycock Travels to Fike

WILSON — Just twice in its football history which dates back to 1961, has Charles B. Aycock won 10 games in a season.

The Golden Falcons (6-0) could take a significant step towards securing their first 10-win season since 2009 with a victory at Wilson Fike on Friday night.

Aycock and Fike are both 3-0 in Quad County 3-A Conference play, and the winner of Friday night’s contest would have the inside track toward a conference championship.

The game can be heard on 98.3 WGBR and Goldsborodailynews.com. The UNC Health Wayne pre-game show starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by the 15th all-time meeting between C.B. Aycock and Wilson Fike at 7.

The Demons have won 10 of the 14 meetings with the Golden Falcons in a series that started in 1997. Fike has also won five of the last nine contests, including a 15-13 victory in Pikeville last season.

The Demons held the Golden Falcons to 65 rushing yards and intercepted three passes in their win over Aycock a year ago.

The Golden Falcons enter Friday night’s trip to Wilson averaging 42.3 points a game and 404.8 (298.8 rushing/106 passing) yards per game.

Behind senior tailbacks Ricky Elliot and Caleb Frederick, Aycock has rushed for 1,793 yards and 26 touchdowns. Elliot has contributed 1,064 yards on the ground with 12 touchdowns, while averaging 10.5 yards per carry.

Golden Falcons’ head coach Tom Zietlow knows his offense will need to have a balanced attack against a Fike defense that has held its last two opponents scoreless.

Protecting the football will be critical for Aycock’s junior quarterback Sid Lancaster, who will be making just his seventh varsity start.

Lancaster has thrown for 637 yards and 10 touchdowns with just two interceptions. He’ll be facing a Demons’ defense that has 18 takeaways (12 interceptions/6 fumble recoveries) through six games.

“We’re going to have to run the ball a little bit better (than last year),” Zietlow said. “I also think we’re going to need to be more balanced. We’ve done well at that this year, being able to have some threats on the outside to throw the football (to), so they can’t just force us to run the ball. We’re able to do a little bit more of both this season, so I think the key will be being balanced.”

Aycock’s defense will be tasked with slowing down Demons’ junior quarterback Cameron Pittman, who has rushed for 869 yards and thrown for 409 yards.

The 5’11, 200 pound Pittman has accounted for 14 total touchdowns and his size can make him difficult to tackle in the open field. Pittman has thrown just one interception this season as the engineer to an offense averaging 27.3 points per game.

“Cameron is a true dual-threat quarterback,” said first-year Fike head coach Rocky Lewis. “He’s tough to bring down being 200 pounds. A lot of times in short yardage we’ll give him the ball, because now he becomes a 200 pound running back. He got good snaps last year as a sophomore, starting in the middle of the season. That’s helped him out coming into his junior year. We’ve seen him continue to get better each week, and he’s been a true leader for us on offense. He’s a lot to prepare for, for our opponents’ defense.”

The Golden Falcons’ defense is giving up just 11 points a game and has forced 15 turnovers (12 interceptions/three fumble recoveries) through its first six games.

Aycock has also sacked opposing quarterbacks 23 times and registered 37 tackles for loss.

Senior defensive lineman Jadon Best was recently selected to represent North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl on Dec. 21 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Through six games Best has 20 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

“We pulled Jadon up from JV as a freshman, so he’s been playing with us for four years,” Zietlow said. “He’s been starting on both the offensive and defensive line for four years, and he’s been a kid that’s been quiet and works. He’s worked well with Coach (A.J.) Mundle on the defensive line and Coach (James) Hawley on the offensive line, to get better and better. He’s just a different type of kid out there.”
