Janet Pate Barfield, 84, passed away at Wayne UNC Health Care on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Born in Wayne County on July 7, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert Pate and Inez Batts Pate.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, David “Bo” Rex Barfield, Sr.; son, David Rex Barfield, Jr.; and brothers, Thomas Pate and Harry Pate and wife, Mary.

Janet is survived by her son, Jeffrey Barfield, and wife, Dale; grandchildren, Ryan Etta Barfield and Mack David Barfield; brother, Richard Pate and wife, Rita; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Pate. Janet is also survived by several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

For over 30 years, Janet was an elementary school teacher. Early into her teaching career, Janet was at Meadow Lane Middle School. She then went to Rosewood Elementary, where she spent the majority of her career. Janet was a dedicated teacher who had a heart for all of her students.

Nothing was more important to Janet than her family. She married her elementary school sweetheart, Bo Barfield. She loved spending time at her home away from home in Sneads Ferry with her son, Jeffrey, and his family. Her love for her family knew no bounds and each moment spent together with them was a memory she would cherish forever. Janet will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

A service to celebrate Janet’s life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Saint Joseph Methodist Church in Pikeville. Burial will follow at Pikeville Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. Janet will lie in state at Saint Joseph from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. for those who wish to pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to Saint Joseph Methodist Church 200 W Church St, Pikeville, NC 27863 in memory of Janet.
