It is with abundant sorrow and profound love we announce that Bill Boyd, 89, found eternally rest at Kitty Askins Hospice Center on Saturday morning.
He was born in Mecklenburg County to the late Ellie Conder Boyd and Joseph G. Boyd. He was a retired Chaplain. Mr. Boyd proudly served in the US Marine Corps for 10 years. He then became a youth director at Yorkmont Bible College in Charlotte. Bill then was a professor at Springfield Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO. He worked as a high school English teacher. He started and directed the Military Christian Center at Camp Lejune. Bill then taught at Grace Bible College in Newton. After this, he went to Pascagoula Naval Station in Pascagoula, MS, and started a Military Christian Center. Mr. Boyd then became an interim missionary pastor in Liscomb, Nova Scotia. He helped establish Goldsboro’s Waynesborough Chapter 1350 Marine Corp League was Chaplain at Waynesborough Chapter 1350 and then became Commandant. Bill became Chaplain for the State of North Carolina Marine Corps League until he retired.
Bill is survived by his wife, Annie Reid Boyd; three sons, Jonathan Boyd and wife Sonya of Ward AR, Jeffrey Boyd, and Gerald Boyd and wife Kelly all of Willis TX. A daughter Deana Dutton of Cora GA, a step-son, Dale Pass and wife Billie of Pine Level, two step-daughters, Tammy Melton and husband Doug of Union Grove and Anette Kerley of Hamptonville, a sister Dorothy Hicklin and husband Richard of Union SC, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Delma Johnson Boyd, two sons, Joseph Boyd and James Boyd, five brothers, J.T. Boyd, James Boyd, Jerry Boyd, Wayne Boyd, and Robert Boyd, four sisters, Cleo Couick, Kathryn Thomas, Lou Boyd, and Margaret Russell.
A memorial service will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home chapel with military honors at 2:00 pm on Wednesday with pastor David Williams officiating. There will be a time of receiving friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 381005.
