Joey Lynn Jones, a native of the Mount Olive area just inside of Sampson County, passed away Monday morning, September 23, 2024, at McLamb’s Rest Home and Assisted Living Center near Benson. He was 78.
Joey was raised on his family’s farm where he assisted his parents as a boy. His young life included his attending Smith Chapel United Methodist Church with his family. After becoming a young man, he attended Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. When his mother and father passed away, he began residing at McLamb’s in the Benson area, during which time he faithfully attended services at St. Mary’s Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church with one of his sisters and her family. He had been employed at several textile factories in custodial duties.
Joey is survived by two sisters, Marguerite J. Hall of near Benson, and Donnice J. Smith of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews; his “family” at McLamb’s; and his St. Mary’s Grove church family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burke M. and Lucille Sutton Jones; and two sisters, Jacquelyn J. Tillman and Sandra J. Gower.
Funeral services for Joey will be held Tuesday, October 1, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Grove Church, and will be officiated by the church pastor, the Rev. Wesley Taylor. Committal rites with burial will be later in the day at 2:00 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park near Goldsboro. The family will receive friends immediately after both events.
