September 17, 2024, 70, Snow Hill —
November 27, 1953 – September 17, 2024
Erwin “Ernie” Homer Layden, Jr., 70, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Ernie was born in Lenoir County to the late Erwin Homer Layden and Wilma Carter Layden on November 27, 1953. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Melki Layden; and a brother, Tully Layden.
With a love for the great outdoors, Ernie was most in his element outside. Whether traveling on his annual camping trip or riding the roads on his motorcycle, the fresh air and sounds of nature enthralled him. Gaining nicknames such as “The Eagle” and “The Legend”, Ernie’s life experiences were always grand.
Ernie considered farming more of a hobby than an occupation, yet one that was worthy of all the time and attention he could give it. His love of family was great, and this extended to the animals that made their home with him.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Following the visitation, friends are welcome to gather for a celebration of life at 4857 Brothers Road, La Grange, NC 28551.
Ernie is survived by his son, Erwin Homer Layden, III, and wife, Melinda; daughter, Virginia “Ginny” Layden Hurley and husband, John; granddaughter, Emma Grace “Gracie” Graves; and brother, Michael Layden and wife, Jane.
