July 2, 2024, 90, Goldsboro —
John Frederick Till, III, 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on April 23, 1934, he was the son of the late John Frederick Till, II and Minnie Dowling Till.
A deep love for our country was ingrained into John. At a young age in Fairview, NC, he watched planes fly overhead and knew that he wanted to be a pilot. After completing his pilot training in the Army Air Corp, he served in the United States Air Force for twenty-eight years. John retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Although he flew many planes, the B-52 was his
favorite. Following his time in the Air Force, John worked for Nortel as a Senior Technical Instructor during the time of the switch from analog to digital.
John always wanted to know how things worked. When he was younger, he loved to rebuild cars, and then as a young pilot, he taught himself how to whittle. He created all kinds of woodland creatures from life-size to “pocket ducks” for which he is best known.
In 1966, John married the love of his life Peggy Till, and they spent 57 loving years together. They enjoyed spending time with their daughter, Heather, and son-in-law, Perry. John also enjoyed spending time with extended family, especially at their yearly family reunion at Edisto Beach, SC.
John was a faithful and active member at First Presbyterian Church in Goldsboro. John loved to worship his Lord and was a member of the usher team. His church family has always held a special place in his heart.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in McChesney Hall.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Peggy Till; and sister, Rubye Stultz.
John is survived by his daughter, Heather Till (Perry Smith); son, Michael Goforth (Shari Winson); and siblings, Virginia Alexander, Ebby Creden, and Buist Till. John also leaves behind his special canine friend, Maggie, and feline friend, Missy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church 1101 E Ash St, Goldsboro, NC 27530 in memory of John.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home.
