May 5, 2024, 81, Goldsboro —
Albert James “A.J.” Hamm, 81, was received into the arms of his Savior on Sunday, May 5, 2024, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wayne County on August 22, 1942, to the late Clifton Albert Hamm and Glennie Caroline Perry Hamm. In addition to his parents, A.J. was preceded in death by his sister, Evon Lasley, and great-grandson, Winston Paul DeCarlo.
A long-haul truck driver, A.J. owned and operated his own rig. Finding God’s beauty in the long distances he often traveled, he saw many sites throughout the country that others only experienced in pictures. Every haul was as much pleasure as it was work as he enjoyed the life of a truck driver.
A.J. was a member of Gateway Community Church where he faithfully worshiped the Lord and found fellowship among fellow believers. A member of Wayne Masonic Lodge #112 A.F. & A.M., he had served as Master of the lodge in 2014. A.J. was also a Shriner and had served as their president. He especially enjoyed his role as a member of the Wayne Mini Rigs and was honored with the award of Mini Rigger of the Year for 2023. Friendships were forged and strengthened through this invaluable group.
With great attention to detail, A.J. was a master at working on cars, woodworking, and carpentry. His skills as a finish carpenter were second to none, and he most recently enjoyed making walking sticks for others.
With a mechanical mind and trucking background, it is no surprise that A.J. was a diehard NASCAR fan. The thrill of watching cars race around the track as he pulled for his favorite driver was just as good as watching his favorite Blue Devils win a game.
For A.J., the family took top priority in his life. Everything else paled in comparison to the love he had for each one of his family, made obvious through his many acts of love and service, as well as quality time spent with them.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Gateway Community Church, 401 W. Main Street, Pikeville. A service to celebrate A.J.’ ‘s life will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Thayer Stamper officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. At other times, the family will be at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Darryl Floars, 102 Cashwell Drive, Goldsboro.
A.J. is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia Wiley Hamm; children, Jamie Hamm and wife, Loi, Tammy Floars and husband, Darryl, Michele Overton and husband, Billy, Scott Hamm, and Sharon Meshaw and husband, Paul; grandchildren, Jason Hamm and wife, April, Bobby Floars and wife, Casey, Blaire DeCarlo and husband, Scott, Brad Floars and wife, Megan, Blake Floars, Cole Dawson and wife, Kelly, Holly Prieto and husband, Occy, Whitney Blackburn, Chase Blackburn and wife, Halyn, and Mackenzi Lynn; fifteen great-grandchildren; very special nieces, Andrea Hardison, Shannon Smith, and Robin Salter; and a good friend, James Deaver.
