Organ Donation Awareness Program Being Held Tuesday

The Wayne County Public Library is hosting an Organ Donation Awareness Program at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Latoya Joyner will be the guest speaker. The library is also accepting new twin-size blankets and throws to donate to dialysis centers in Wayne County.

The Wayne County Commissioners recently proclaimed April as National Donate Life Month in Wayne County. According to the proclamation, one organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and improve more than 75 lives through tissue, blood, bone, bone marrow, and cornea donation.

The proclamation also states:

  • according to the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS), more than 103,687 people are waiting for organ transplants nationally, and 3,645 of those people are in North Carolina
  • an average of 17 people awaiting transplants die each day because there is a severe shortage of organ donors; and
  • every 10 minutes, another name is added to the national transplant waiting list and the list is growing faster than the rate of organ donation.
