Mary Elizabeth Carpenter Sponaugle

Mary Elizabeth Carpenter Sponaugle, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 26, 2024, at the age of 64,  at Genesis Center in Mount Olive where she had been receiving care for the past six months.  Prior to that, she was a resident of Mount Olive. 

Born in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Britton Carpenter and Lucille Barbara Hostdjor Carpenter.  She received a bachelor’s degree from VCU.  For a long tenure of time, she worked as a legal secretary with Troutman-Sanders Attorneys in Richmond, Va.  Upon her relocation to North Carolina, she was employed with Butterball in its supply department.

Ms.Sponaugle, the widow of Christopher Sponaugle, had authored a book, A Summer on Choctaw Mountain.  She enjoyed arts and crafts and had taught stained glass art.  She was a lover of animals, especially dogs with her own pet being named “Mello.”

She leaves behind a son, Jesse B. Carpenter of Newton Grove, along with his daughters, her precious granddaughters, Emily Carpenter (age 6), and Sophie Carpenter (age 4).

A gathering of family and friends will be Friday, March 29, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.
