Earl Ray Hughes, 86, of Dudley departed this walk of life Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Goldsboro Health & Rehabilitation with his family by his side.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. Interment with full military honors will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hughes was born in Calypso, North Carolina on October 3, 1937, to the late Jimmie and Christine Combs Hughes. He was a member of the Hydrant Church of Goldsboro.  He was known as Grandpa Earl from Putt Putt and the Fun Factory in Goldsboro.

Mr. Hughes was a man who dedicated his life to serving his country. He first joined the United States Air Force being eager to serve his country and make a difference having served during the Vietnam War.  After serving in the United States Air Force and retiring as Master Sergeant, he continued to serve his community by working and retiring from O’Berry Center. His passion for helping others was evident in his work.

Earl left a lasting impact on the lives of those he had served whether it was his service to his country or his community, and the legacy he has created will continue to live on for years to come. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Opel Capps Hughes; one son, Arthur Hughes; two daughters, Kim Hughes (Bobby) and Cindy Pate; one brother, David Hughes and wife, Mary; two grandchildren, William Kyle Pate and wife, Abby and Stacey Hughes; one great-grandson, Lewis Pate; special friend and caregiver, Shelly Bailey; his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and his beloved pets, Gracie, Baylee and Nia.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Terry Ray Hughes; two brothers, and three sisters; one granddaughter, Torrie Hughes and his cherished Black Lab, Pepper.
