Dorothy Hope Harriott Raney passed away peacefully at Kitty Askins Hospital, Goldsboro, NC, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. She was 96 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Samuel Raney, to whom she was married for almost 55 years, until his death in 2005.
Dorothy was born on January 6, 1928, and was the only child of the late Henry Vernon Harriott and Florence Shelmer Harriott of Cochituate, MA.
Dorothy is survived by her three daughters and their families, Carla Hope Raney (Jeff Ross), granddaughter Emma Hope Khatami (Sean), and great-grandchildren Audrey Hope and Cameron Lee; Elizabeth Raney Ireton, granddaughter Jennifer Ireton Perkins (Zak), and great-grandchildren Harrison Carl, Elizabeth Kate, and Zachary Lane; granddaughter Jordan Elizabeth Ireton (Jesse Hannigan), great-grandchildren Jane Elizabeth, Julian David and Lucille James; and Joanna Raney Nightingale (Malcolm).
Dorothy graduated from Wayland High School in 1945. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked at the Office of Naval Research. It was there that she met Carl S. Raney, whom she married in 1950. In the following years, Dorothy and her family moved frequently for Carl’s work, and everywhere they went Dorothy made fast friends, which she kept her entire life. She was a short story writer, and her work was published in several regional and ecclesiastical magazines. She was proud to have continued her education after her children were grown; she earned her bachelor’s degree and then a Master of Science degree in Social Work at Ohio State University. She enjoyed positions as a social worker over the next several years, working with seniors and children.
In 1995, Dorothy and Carl moved to Morehead City, where she lived happily for the rest of her life. She was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal church, serving on the vestry and numerous committees, and making deep friendships that enriched her life.
