John Franklin Lancaster

February 26, 2024, 90, Goldsboro —

John Franklin Lancaster, 90, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024, surrounded by family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. John was born on May 1, 1933, in Wake County to Atlas David Lancaster and Bessie Moore Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his parents and eleven of his siblings.

John’s impeccable work ethic was evident to anyone who met him. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. After his service, John worked for Durham Life Insurance Company for 35 years, where he retired as the district manager and a valued colleague.

Family, faith, and integrity were the pillars on which John built his life. He worshiped at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro. He was a Mason and a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge #340 AF and AM in Pikeville. Through both his church and the lodge, John sought to improve his community and himself.

John expressed love for the outdoors and pride in his home through caring for his lawn. It was rare to see a pinecone, leaf, or pine needle out of place. His passion was reflected by the meticulous care John had for his yard, year-round. However, he looked forward to spring the most, when everything started to bloom.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church followed by a service to celebrate John’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary with Dr. Glenn Phillips officiating. A private interment will be held in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors.

John is survived by his wife of 71 years, Sue Webb Lancaster; son, John Lawrence Lancaster and wife, Joy of Mount Olive; daughter, Myra Susan Lancaster of Wilson; two grandchildren, Christopher Gurley and Candice Lancaster; and great-granddaughter, Aynslee Danielle Gurley.
