Trojans surge past Southern Wesleyan, 62-57

CENTRAL, S.C. – Sophomore Laila Anderson made the go-ahead layup with 47 seconds left in the game, as the University of Mount Olive women’s basketball team featured three players in double-figures in a 62-57 win over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action.

With the win, the Trojans snap a three-game skid and improve to 8-17 overall behind a 6-11 mark in conference action. Mount Olive secured a massive win in the KPI standings, as SWU ranked No. 8 overall entering the contest.

Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 11-16 this season with a 9-8 record in league play.

Anderson registered a game-high 18 points with four rebounds, two assists, and three steals in 34 minutes. Senior Reagan Hune finished with 16 points, six rebounds, one assist, and four steals in 38 minutes.

Junior Tiandria Tucker delivered 14 points on six-of-seven shooting while adding four rebounds and three steals in 18 minutes.

In the first quarter, the Trojans offense found its rhythm early by building a 14-5 lead while making 6-of-10 attempts in the opening five minutes. After a short scoreless drought, Southern Wesleyan scored eight unanswered points to finish the quarter, 14-13.

The Warriors went on a 14-2 rally in the second quarter over a four-plus minute stretch to take their largest lead of the game at 27-16. Mount Olive tallied eight of the final 10 points to head into halftime trailing by a 29-24 margin.

The sides traded baskets a majority of the third quarter, as the Warriors maintained a 43-35 advantage at the 1:37 mark. In the final 34 seconds, the Trojans registered five straight points to cut the deficit to 43-40 heading into the final 10 minutes.

Hune nailed a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 43-43 before Anderson tallied five consecutive points to take a 48-43 edge.

SWU mounted a 7-2 run to once again tie the game at 50-50 with 4:44 remaining before taking a 57-56 lead on a layup with 1:28 to go. UMO grabbed the lead on a layup by Anderson with 47 seconds left before the Trojans made four-of-four from the free-throw line to seal the win, 62-57.

UMO shot at a 34.3 clip (23-of-67) from the floor while going 7-of-25 (28.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, SWU finished the game shooting 44.7 percent (21-of-47) and converted 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from three-point range.

The Warriors held a 40-33 rebounding advantage with 28 points in the paint, while the Trojans registered 20 points off 27 forced turnovers.

Senior Lexi Greffen finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 31 minutes on the court. Fellow senior Shelby Glance posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding five assists and two blocks in 31 minutes.

The Trojans close out the regular season on Wednesday when they host rival Barton in Conference Carolinas action at 5 p.m.
