United Way of Wayne County Announces Funding Support of Homeless and Youth

For more than 100 years, United Ways across the country have been a trusted source to partner with and support non-profits and programs through a vetting process.

Thanks to the support of House of Representatives and Majority Leader, John Bell, and the North Carolina State budget’s 2023 Appropriations Act, the United Way of Wayne County Board of Directors has designated funding in three areas of need: Non-Profit support, Homeless, and Youth.

The Board of Directors has voted to divide the designation of $750,000.00 by thirds.  One-third will support the United Ways investment in non-profits, from building capacity to the Basic Needs program; one-third will support the needs of the Homeless, by way of resources and sheltering and finally, one-third will support Youth, by reducing gang violence and creating a stronger prevention environment.

On Tuesday, the Board approved state funding to address homeless and sheltering needs to Tommy’s Foundation, Wayne Uplift Resources Association and 4 Day Movement.  These three organizations have been working tirelessly in our community and these funds will ensure a significant impact.

The Board further approved funding to provide Youth Programming around Gang Prevention to Communities Supporting Schools, Safe Space for Youth, and the Wayne County Sherrif’s Department.  These organizations have the ability to empower and impact our most at risk youth through programming and relationship building.

Some of these non-profits were approved with contingencies of financial oversight by the United Way of Wayne County as they continue to develop their policies and fiscal responsibilities.

Board Member, Eddie Edwards shared “It was a privilege to review all the requests and offer support financially or through future development.”  Many of them are at a tipping point and this will allow them to develop and grow to serve our community at a greater capacity.”
