Dr. Siegfried “Sig” J. Schaberg, of Goldsboro, age 84, died Wednesday, 14th February 2024, peacefully at home.

Dr. Schaberg was born on the 15th of April 1939 in Randsdorf, Germany, a suburb of the capital city of Berlin. He was reared by his parents Mr. Johannes G. Schaberg and Mrs. Kate L. Schaberg. World War II displaced them from Germany to France and eventually immigrated to the United States.

Dr. Schaberg graduated high school from Alexander Ramsey, in the northern part of St. Paul. Dr. Schaberg completed Dentistry School at Marquette University. Dr. Schaberg was awarded the Operative Dentistry Excellence award and became a member of the National Honorary Dental Fraternity (Omicron Kappa Upsilon-OKU).

In 1960, Sig joined the U.S. Navy as an ensign. He met his beautiful, effervescent, and supportive wife, Lt. Gloria Bruce, whom he loved immensely. They married at San Luis Rey Mission on 19th June 1965. Sig was very nervous but loved Gloria and wanted to live with her for the rest of his life. Sig enjoyed his career in the Navy serving on several different ships (USS Wright, USS Little Rock, and USS John F. Kennedy) as well as different military installations (Bethesda Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital, Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Subic Bay, and the Washington Naval Yard). Dr. Schaberg had a countless number of deployments from Antarctica, New Zealand, Europe, the Philippines, and other locations around the World. Dr. Schaberg completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He also received his Ph.D. in anatomy from Union College for his research in bone regeneration and utilization for facial reconstruction in armed conflicts. Dr. Schaberg retired from the military after twenty-two years of active duty and four years of reserve duty.

Dr. Schaberg went into private practice for oral and maxillofacial surgery with Dr. Meadows in Jacksonville NC and they opened another practice in Morehead City. They ventured out and opened a thriving practice in Goldsboro with the help of Dr. Lutcavage. The practice began to continue to grow while assisting families in all of these communities adding additional exceptional Doctors (Dr. Vinton, Dr. Smith and Dr.Fiddler). Dr. Schaberg also served on the Board of Directors for Wayne Memorial and became President for a period of time. Dr. Schaberg retired from his private practice to spend time with his family and traveling the world.

Dr. Schaberg was a devoted Christian at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and assisted with building the new church and took on the position of treasurer. He also devoted his time to helping with Habitat for Humanity. He was always supportive of community programs, and his family, and enjoyed fishing and most of the stories were true.

Survivors include his wife Gloria A. Schaberg married 58 years, four children, Yvonne L. Schaberg of Raleigh, John W. Schaberg of Columbia, SC, Eric S. Schaberg of Wilmington, and Annette D. Woodard of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Brock, Jordan, Derek, Zack, Nick, Lauren, and Megan; greatgrandchildren, Rory, Hank and Rowan.

A viewing will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on 25th February 2024 at Seymour Funeral Home 1300 Wayne Memorial Dr. Goldsboro NC. A Funeral Service will commence at 10 am-11 am on 26th February 2024 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 532 Country Day Rd., Goldsboro, NC 27530. A reception will follow with the family after the service. The Family will proceed to the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 1:30 pm to have a private burial to lay to rest their beloved father.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Goldsboro.
