February 5, 2024, 98, Goldsboro —
Roger Paul Casey, Sr., 98, passed away peacefully at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, surrounded by his family on Monday morning, February 5, 2024. He was born in Wayne County to the late Samuel C. Casey, Sr. and Celia Daniels Casey on August 14, 1925. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jewel Keen Casey; and brothers, Sam Casey, Jr. and Gary Casey.
Roger owned and operated the family business, Keen Plumbing, in Goldsboro for many years. He could accomplish almost anything he put his mind to. He was a take-charge, determined man who many admired. He had a strong work ethic, but work did not get in the way of supporting his family in their endeavors.
Roger faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the 30th Infantry Army Division known as “Old Hickory”. The memories created stayed with him and eventually became books and memoirs for Roger. He wanted to share his experiences with others as well as tell of the history of Goldsboro, a town he loved. He had a gift for telling stories and his passion captivated many.
Roger loved to travel and the beach was one of his favorite destinations. He stayed fit at the Family YMCA, where many friends became more like family. Staying healthy enabled him to do the things he loved the most – gardening, Shag Dancing, and most of all, spending time with his precious grandchildren.
First Baptist Church in Goldsboro was where Roger found his home and served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was an active member as long as he was able and wanted to support the ministries of the church in any way he could.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 9, 2024, in the hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro. A service to celebrate Roger’s life will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Rev. Keith Hudson and Rev. Scott Thrailkill officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
Roger is survived by his children, Roger Casey, Jr., and wife, Johnnie, Betsy Casey Taylor and husband, Dana and Celia Casey Wells and husband, Christopher; grandchildren, John Roger Casey and wife, Kerry, Mary Jewel Casey Shaffer and husband, Jonathan, Cyle Casey Moore and husband, Lee, Elizabeth Clark McCauley, and husband, Shawn, Andrew Taylor and wife, Kelly, Lori Taylor, Bryce Jamison Wells, and Casey Robert Wells; and great-grandchildren, Paul Casey, Jewel Shaffer, Taylor Shaffer, Caroline McCauley, Addison Taylor, and Meredith Taylor. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Duncan.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the Christian Caregivers of Goldsboro. It was their wonderful care that allowed Roger to remain at home until his passing.
