Twitty Retires as Executive Director at Wayne Prep

Wayne Preparatory Academy is searching for a new Executive Director after former Executive Director John Twitty retired last week.

In a letter emailed to parents by Wayne Prep late last week, it was announced that Dr. Tina Hinson would be replacing Twitty as Wayne Prep’s Interim Executive Director. Dr. Hinson has served as Wayne Prep’s Elementary Principal since 2021 and has 35 years as a teacher and an administrator.

The Wayne Prep Board of Directors will immediately begin a comprehensive search process for a new permanent executive director, led by Director of Human Resources Director Rebecca Whittle.

Twitty’s background in education includes stints as principal at Goldsboro High School and Wayne High School Academy.

Goldsboro Mayor Charles Gaylor serves on the Wayne Prep Board of Directors as the Vice Chair. Gaylor offered his thoughts on Twitty’s tenure at Wayne Prep saying, “I’m excited about the future of the school and I’m grateful to John (Twitty) for the years of service to the school. He had a tough job guiding the school through challenging financial decisions, COVID, the construction of a high school, and growing the school to almost 1,000 scholars. He’s really got a lot to be proud of. As for the search, the outpouring of professional interest already is really encouraging. The search process must be widespread and engaging for the community. Once completed, I’m confident that we will have a vision for the future and an exciting path forward.”

According to the letter Wayne Prep emailed to parents, Dr. Hinson taught mathematics and health in Wayne County and Duplin County Public Schools, as well as 4th grade at Wayne Prep. She also worked as principal at Pink Hill Elementary, as assistant principal at South Lenoir High School, and Long
Hill Elementary School, and as curriculum coach at Benson Middle School.

Wayne Prep opened in 2014 and has seen steady growth in enrollment each year.

In the letter emailed to parents, Wayne Preparatory Academy Board of Directors Chair Scott Mackey said, “The future of Wayne Prep has never been brighter and that is thanks to an excellent faculty,
support staff, administration, and our scholars. We are excited to continue to create a legacy of
leadership and learning.”

Goldsborodailynews.com has reached out to Mackey for additional details regarding Twitty’s departure from Wayne Prep, as well as the search for a new Executive Director.
