December 14, 2023, 79, Mount Olive —
Barry Michael Giddings, 79, died December 14, 2023, at Genesis Mt. Olive Center, where he had lived for a number of years.
Barry was a remarkable man. Born with cerebral palsy, he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in physics from East Carolina University. Despite that Pirate connection, Barry was an ardent Carolina Tar Heels fan. He loved a good joke, and he enjoyed being in the middle of any activities going on. To that end, he was a master Bingo player. He valued his friends at Genesis, and he was known as a good friend.
Barry loved his church, Mount Olive Presbyterian. He looked forward to Sunday worship and seeing his church family. He was a long-time member of the Mixed Adult Sunday School Class. He served as an elder on the session, as a Sunday school teacher, and as the eighth-grade LOGOS Bible skills teacher. He participated in LOGOS activities each Wednesday night, and he was always game to participate in the annual Live Nativity. For years, he kept Sunday School attendance records on his computer. In 2018, he was honored as an Outstanding Older Adult by New Hope Presbytery.
He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph E. Giddings, Jr. and Sue Pickard Giddings, and the love of his life, Nancy Mauney. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph E. Giddings III, and Claudia Giddings of Scotland Neck.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Dr. Bob Bardin officiating.
