Alan H. Merlin

Alan H. Merlin

December 4, 2023, 77, Goldsboro —

Alan H. Merlin, 77, fought the good fight and finished his course here on Earth on Monday, December 4, 2023. Alan was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Joseph and Dorothy Merlin on May 22, 1946.

Alan served in the United States Air Force, retiring after 23 years as a Senior Master Sergeant. The skills he learned in the military carried over into his career and civilian life. For many years, Alan was a valued employee of Pappy’s Army and Navy in Goldsboro. He was always working on something and after retiring from the military Alan began attending college at Mount Olive College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Alan was a joy to be around and loved to laugh. He lived up to his name, as he was always kidding around and joking. Watching others laugh brought him joy. He took care of others and was simply a loving guy. He was a ‘yes man’ in the sense he was willing to help at any time and in any way he could. He was willing to do whatever it took. His kindness and generosity will definitely be missed.

Alan and Faye raised a family and found enjoyment in their retirement years taking trips with them. They had a special bond that allowed them to endure whatever came their way. While their children brought them joy, there was something extra special about their grandchildren. Alan loved being a “Poppy” and treasured the moments he spent with them.

Other than family, Alan’s passion was sports. He loved watching football but also Gunsmoke any time he could. Alan also enjoyed golf and trap shooting for a little relaxation.

Alan’s faith was an important part of his journey and was key in many of the relationships he had with others. Through all he faced, he knew he was cared for and loved by God.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Alan’s life at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jeff Dail presiding. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park with full military honors.

Alan is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Faye E. Merlin; son, Joseph Merlin and wife Miriam of Greenville, SC; daughter, Crystal Carter and husband Brian of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Alli Merlin, Noah Carter and Addison Carter; and many special friends that he loved very much.
