November 23, 2023, 79, Goldsboro —
Ricky Ray Gurganus, 79, passed away on Thanksgiving Day at Sutton’s Retirement Center. He gained his independence from the cares of this world to find rest and peace. Ricky was born in Wayne County on February 13, 1944, to the late Frank and Madeline Gurganus. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Linda Pearsall Gurganus, and grandson, Cameron John Gerken.
Ricky was dedicated to the United States Army from his early years. He knew he wanted to serve his country. He found his place in the Army, retiring on February 13, 2004, and earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Ricky proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His valor and skill were recognized with numerous decorations, including a Bronze Star. Ricky did not stop working at retirement from the service. For 30 years, he worked in transportation for the State of North Carolina at Cherry Hospital.
Ricky and Linda raised a family and found enjoyment in their retirement years seeing parts of the world they had not seen. They had a special bond that allowed them to endure whatever came their way. While their children brought them joy, there was something extra special about their grandchildren. Ricky loved being a papa and treasured the moments he spent with them.
When Ricky wasn’t working, traveling, or spending time with family, he could be seen making his way to go fishing, hunting, and, early in life, riding his horses.
Ricky and Linda worshiped the Lord and were members of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. When Ricky was unable to attend he enjoyed watching some of his favorite speakers on television.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Ricky’s life at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Barry Teague officiating. Interment with military honors will be held in Wayne Memorial Park.
Ricky is survived by his daughters, Angie Lancaster and husband, Brent of Goldsboro and Debra Lewis and husband, Christopher of Pikeville; grandchildren, Keli Gerken, Tyler Rowe and wife, Brianna, Kati Gerken, Kourtni Gerken and Landon Lewis; great-granddaughter, Kasleigh; and Tyler and Brianna are anticipating the birth of a son in May. He is also survived by his sister, Darlene Massey, and husband, Anthony; nieces, Erin and Elyse; and great-nephew, Carter.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Gentiva Hospice Care. Love and heartfelt thanks are also expressed to his caregivers and friends at Sutton’s Retirement Center. May God bless each of you in a very special way.
