Beulah Hazel Waters Kornegay passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in-law on Nov 21st, surrounded by her family. She was 97 years old.
Hazel was born and raised in the White Flash community, the daughter of Robert Glenn and Beulah (Puckett) Waters.
After graduating high school at BF Grady, she married Adolph Kornegay in 1943.
Hazel became known to her family as “Meme”. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, selling Stanley products, playing cards, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Jimmy Kornegay of Edgewater, Maryland, Billy Kornegay and wife Marcia of Clayton, Deborah Kornegay and husband Dr. Hervy Kornegay Sr of Calypso, Mike Kornegay and wife Tammy of Clayton; 8 grandchildren, Tucker Walther of Edgewater, Maryland, Dr. Chad Kornegay and wife Kelly of Calypso, Dr. Todd Kornegay and wife Jennifer of Hampstead, Dr. Jon Kornegay and wife Lindsay of Calypso, Brad Kornegay of Greenville, Paul Kornegay and wife Megan of Calypso, Brian Kornegay of Clayton, and Justin Kornegay of Waynesville; 14 great-grandchildren, JR Walther, Van Walther, Christopher Kornegay, Boden Walther, Owen Kornegay, Ethan Kornegay, Charlie Kornegay, Addie Kate Kornegay, Battle Kornegay, Anna Kornegay, Leo Kornegay, EB Kornegay, Kayden Kornegay, and Cooper Kornegay; 2 sisters, Betty Lou Kornegay of Mt. Olive, Nellie Davis and husband Larry of Albertson.
Mrs. Kornegay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; a grandson, Jimmy Walther; 4 brothers, William Waters, Robert Waters, Cecil Waters, and Henry Waters; 2 sisters, Mary Edna West and Sarah Smith.
Graveside committal service will be on Saturday, Nov 25th at 11:00 am at the Calypso Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 25th at 2:00 pm at the Hazel Waters Kornegay Assembly Hall at the University of Mount Olive, 207 Wooten Street, Mt. Olive, NC. Reverend Dr. Bob Bardin will officiate. Family will receive friends and relatives at other times at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Hervy Kornegay Sr, 141 Edwina Kornegay Road, Calypso, NC.
The family would like to thank ECU Health, Home Health, and Hospice for the compassionate care given to Meme over the past several months.
