Rotary Club Closes Fourth Annual Field of Honor

The Rotary Club of Goldsboro closed its Fourth Annual Field of Honor on Nov.16 with a ceremony on the front lawn of Wayne Community College.“Each one of these 206 American flags represents a mentor, veteran, loved one, or hometown hero,” said Rotary Club President Duffy Fleming.“All walks of life and vocations have been represented here by this display of selflessness,” echoed Salvation Army Captain Dawn Whitaker in her remarks.“As we gather today to close this moment in time, we ponder our Goldsboro, with its deep roots and diverse tapestry, exemplifying the power of collective action and the transformative impact that serving can have on a community,” Mrs. Whitaker said. “As we delve into the theme of serving and service above self, it is essential to recognize that this principle is not just a notion but a living reality right here in our midst.”Her message was capped off with a special vocal and guitar performance of “America the Beautiful” by her husband, Salvation Army Captain Jonathan Whitaker. The event also featured the posting of the colors by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and “The Star-Spangled Banner” provided by WCC Vice President Renita Allen Dawson.“This project continues to touch people even after the flags have been taken down,” Fleming said, noting that the generosity of this year’s flag donors and event sponsors will allow her club to fund more scholarships than ever before. The Field of Honor is set to return to the same location from mid-September through mid-November next year. The club will begin taking donor and sponsor orders next summer on the project webpage (www.goldsbororotary.org/fieldofhonor) in summer 2024.
