November 9, 2023, 81, Goldsboro —
Donald Ray “Don” Ham, 81, departed this life on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness with pulmonary fibrosis and COPD. Born in Greene County on May 2, 1942, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Bessie Corbett Ham.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers, Roger Ham and James Ham and wife, Jean; and sister, Elizabeth Mewborn, and husband, Joseph.
Don owned and operated Senior Benefits Corporation. Working alongside his nephew, Dennis Mewborn, the two had a strong bond that went beyond a business and family relationship. Don truly loved Dennis and his wife, Bobbie Jo, and enjoyed the time they spent together, especially during his illness.
Dedicated to his Lord and the church, Don was faithful in his membership at Woods Grove PFWB Church. There, he served over 14 years as a deacon and was always willing to serve the church in whatever capacity was needed.
With a love of the outdoors, Don maintained a beautiful garden. Just as old-time neighbors did, he readily shared the bounty of his garden with those nearby. Time working in the yard was always a pleasure, and he looked forward to playing golf with his friends every chance he got. Fishing trips were also a highlight for Don, but only when there were plenty of fish biting.
Possessing a heart for others, Don was kind and generous to all God’s creatures, from mankind to animals. As a child, he would take in any stray animals if he knew that he could provide them a better home and they always enjoyed anything Don was eating.
Time with family was Don’s ultimate joy. Serving the Lord and loving his family were two things that Donald always kept at the top of his priorities.
Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Price Ham; daughters, Tracy Adams and husband, Stan, and Donna Lewis and husband, Chad; grandchildren Drew Grady and wife, Cassie, Jackson Grady, Abigail Lewis, and Lexton Lewis; great-granddaughter, Madilyn Irene “Madi” Grady; brother, Ron Ham, and wife, Linda; sister-in-law, Sandra Ham; and several nieces and nephews he loved very much.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 12, 2023, from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. at Woods Grove P.F.W.B. Church followed by a service to celebrate Don’s life at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Barry Teague officiating. Interment will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Thad West and his clinical assistant, Amanda. Their love and heartfelt thanks are also expressed to special friends, Dr. Keith Carmack and wife, Robin.
