Donald Byrd Peele

Donald Byrd Peele

November 2, 2023, 92, Goldsboro —

Donald Byrd Peele fought the good fight and finished his course here on earth on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Don was born in Wayne County to the late George Willis Peele and Aunita Lancaster Peele on December 5, 1930. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Hilda Gray Lancaster Peele; brother, George Peele; and sisters, Josephine Prebula and Marjorie Smith.

Graduating from New Hope High School, Don went on to attend Wake Forest University. Playing baseball while in high school, Don was recognized as a standout athlete. His love for the game and outstanding ability allowed him to later play semi-pro baseball and softball for some of the local leagues.

For many years, Don worked as an insurance agent with Western-Southern Life Insurance Company. Don also farmed in the Pikeville Community. His love for the land and being outside working the soil was evident. His joy was profound when he was afforded the opportunity of being on the farm. His strong work ethic allowed him to be successful in both careers and was a trait that he instilled in his two sons.

Though later years seemed to leave little time for fishing, he found much enjoyment on the banks of the river in earlier years when his schedule would allow.

A devoted member of Gideons International, Don served the Goldsboro North Camp in many ways. Believing deeply in the mission of the Gideons, he lived and breathed getting the word of God out to people. Knowing that one lost soul was one too many, and he did his best to spread the word of God to all he met through word, deed, and example. Active as a member of Mount Carmel Church, he served the Lord faithfully through various ministries, including Sunday School Superintendent and Lay Leader.

Don is survived by his children, Grey Peele and wife, Valerie and Gregg Peele and wife, Sandra; grandchildren, Karen Peele and husband, Guile Contreras, Jennifer Peele, Charles Peele and Robert Peele; great-granddaughter Madelyn Capps; brother, David L. “Skeeter” Peele, and wife, Doris; and many nieces, nephews and friends he loved very much.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 5, 2023, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Mount Carmel Church followed by a service at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Rose Hicks officiating. Interment will be on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in Pikeville Cemetery.
