Mount Olive Police Respond to Stolen Vehicle and Shooting

MOUNT OLIVE – On Oct. 30 at approximately 3:30 p.m., an officer with the Mount Olive Police Department responded to the area of Martin St. near John St., in reference to a victim who had reported their vehicle stolen on Oct. 28, and had located their vehicle traveling down Martin Street. While officers were en route to the location, the call was upgraded to a shooting and vehicle crash. Officers arrived and located the juvenile driver of the stolen pickup truck.

The 16-year-old juvenile was suffering from a gunshot wound to the ear, and the owner of the vehicle was standing by and stated he was the one who fired the shots.

The 16-year-old was transported to Wayne UNC Healthcare where they were treated and released. The owner of the vehicle stated that the shot was fired due to self-defense.

Investigators with the Mount Olive Police Department began an investigation, and the information obtained was presented to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office.

After consulting with the District Attorney, no charges will be filed against the vehicle’s owner. Charges are pending against the 16-year-old juvenile.

Due to the age of the individual involved, the names of those involved are not being released. The Mount Olive Police Department would like to thank the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Olive Fire Department, and Wayne County Dispatch for their assistance with this incident.
