Grover Douglas “Doug” Massey, Jr.

October 15, 2023, 75, Goldsboro —

Grover Douglas “Doug” Massey, Jr., 75, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at his home. Doug was born in Wayne County to the late Grover Douglas Massey, Sr. and Ruby Baugus Massey on August 30, 1948. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Carlton Warren.

Doug graduated from Mount Olive Junior College and attended North Carolina State University. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an interpreter and translator.

Scouting played a large role in Doug’s life. He served scouts in the Tuscarora Council for many years in various capacities and dedicated much of his time to training boys in scouting.

The outdoors seemed to call Doug by name. He savored being outside for nearly any reason but especially enjoyed working in the yard, cutting the grass in his yard and the yards of numerous neighbors. Doug enjoyed keeping his yard immaculate, as it always showed.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Doug’s life at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro with military honors provided by the United States Navy.

Doug is survived by his wife of 23 years, Kaye S. Massey; daughter, Melissa Weber and husband, Michael; grandson, Riley Weber; and sister, Celia M. Dean and husband, Eric. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Allison W. Sauls and husband, Mike; and step-grandchildren, Jacob Sauls, Matthew Sauls, Anthony Warren, and Carlton McCullen.
