Glenn Leroy Hartman, Jr.

Glenn Leroy Hartman, Jr.

October 13, 2023, 83, Goldsboro —

Glenn Leroy Hartman, Jr., 83, beloved husband, daddy, papa, and friend, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. Glenn was born in Beaver Falls, PA to the late Glenn Leroy Hartman, Sr. and Julia Ross Hartman on December 8, 1939.

Glenn proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. While stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, Glenn met his bride, Mattie, and they remained in Wayne County. For many years, Glenn worked as a truck driver transporting gasoline throughout North Carolina.

Glenn’s life was centered on his deep faith. He fervently put God first in all things. He worshiped and served his Lord and Savior in many ways as a member of Pikeville Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, serving diligently as a Royal Ranger Commander for many years.

With a spirit of generosity and the heart of a servant, Glenn dedicated himself to almost 55 years of service with the fire department, starting with the Pikeville-Pleasant Grove Fire Department in March of 1967. His years of service allowed him to earn the rank of Assistant Chief, Chief, and Captain. Always willing to extend a helping hand to those in need, his actions spoke well of his true nature. Glenn served as an instructor of fire classes at Wayne Community College for many years. One of the highest honors Glenn received was when he was awarded a lifetime membership in the Wayne County Fireman’s Association.

A “jack of all trades”, Glenn especially enjoyed carpentry and woodworking. When he wasn’t working or busy with his carpentry work, Glenn loved nothing more than to feel the tug of a fish on the line. He shared his love for auto mechanics with his grandsons, and they each enjoyed spending time with their papa.

Glenn believed family always came first. He wanted to make sure all of his family was loved and cared for, and this was especially true for Mattie. Glenn loved being a daddy and papa and made sure to never miss any of their activities. It was all for those he loved so much. He truly sought to take care of those he loved the most in every way.

Gifts of time and energy to his fellowman didn’t go unnoticed. Due to Glenn’s commitment to the greater good of his community, state, and country, he served as the Mayor of Pikeville from 2014 – 2018. Glenn was honored in 2018 most notably for North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, by Governor Roy Cooper.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Glenn’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Bryan Wheeler officiating. Interment with military and fireman honors will be in Pikeville Cemetery.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mattie Teachey Hartman; daughters, Melody Hartman Shaffer and husband, James and Glenda Hartman Parks and husband, Ken; and grandsons, Jacob Wheeler and Adam Wheeler and his girlfriend, Emily Siniavsky.
