Charles Irvin Pope, 89, entered into his Heavenly Home on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. He was born in Wayne County to the late Waverly and Didie Bass Pope on July 4, 1934. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Forehand Pope; sisters, Alice Evans, Mildred Bass, Gray Lamm, Geraldine Lamm, Pauline Raper, and Glennie Rowland; and brother, Glenn Pope.
Charles was married to Shirley, the love of his life, for over 65 years. Together, they built a life they loved. Charles was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather, and wonderful friend. He proudly served his community for 24 years as a firefighter with the Belfast Volunteer Fire Department and was named a lifetime member for his dedicated service.
Charles was a valued employee and truck driver for Rex Whitfield and Whitfield Enterprises.
A fine man, Charles loved the Lord with all of his heart. He faithfully worshiped at the Pikeville Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church in Pikeville and served in various capacities. With a great love of music, Charles used his voice to sing for God’s glory, along with his family.
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 25, 2023, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Charles’ life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Dr. Don Sauls officiating. Interment will be on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the Pikeville Cemetery with Pastor Mark Whitfield officiating.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Patsy Pope Mozingo; son, Gaylon Pope; grandchildren, Brandon Massey and wife, Crystal and Jonathan Holland and wife, Bethany; three great-grandchildren; sister, Shelby Lynch and husband, Mitchell; and several nieces, nephews and special friends he loved very much.
