Larceny Suspect in Custody After Resisting Arrest

On Sept. 12 at approximately 10:35 a.m., officers with the Goldsboro Police Department were dispatched to Target, 1204 Sunburst Drive, for reports of a larceny. Target Loss Prevention reported that an unknown white male stole a Go Trax Electric bicycle from the business.

After stealing the bicycle, the suspect fled into the wooded area known as “Tent City” on Royall Avenue. A description of the suspect was broadcast over the radio. Members of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections Probation and Parole heard the description given and identified the suspect as Steven Alton Carlton.

Knowing Carlton was a resident of “Tent City,” Goldsboro Police Department officers entered “Tent City,: but were unable to locate Carlton. The stolen merchandise was recovered within the flight path of Carlton.

On Sept. 21, at approximately 4:48 p.m., officers with the Goldsboro Police Department were again dispatched to Target for a problem with a subject. Target Loss Prevention reported that Carlton was again inside the business.

It was confirmed that Carlton had active warrants for Misdemeanor Probation Violation, Felony Probation Violation, and Misdemeanor Larceny (Wake Co). Before officers could arrive on the scene, Carlton left the business, traveling toward “Tent City” on a bicycle.

Officers located Carlton at the intersection of Sunburst Drive and Royall Avenue. Upon seeing officers approaching, Carlton fled into traffic on his bicycle.

Carlton continued to flee traveling into the public vehicular area of Stay Apartments Suite before making his way behind Brooklyn Pizzeria. Carlton dumped his bicycle in the dumpster of the business in effort to hide from law enforcement.

Officers located Carlton at the dumpster and attempted to take him into custody. Carlton refused commands from officers and attempted to grab a pocket knife which was concealed in his front right pants pocket.

Officers effectively deployed a taser on Carlton and placed him into custody without further incident. Carlton was transported to the Wayne County Magistrate’s Office and charged with Resisting Public Officer. Carlton was also served with an Order for Arrest: Felony Probation Violation, Order for Arrest: Misdemeanor Probation Violation, and an Order for Arrest: Misdemeanor Larceny (Wake Co). Carlton received a $70,000 secured bond for the listed charges and was released into the Wayne County Detention Center.
