Richard Ronald Heller, 87, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, while being cared for at Brookdale Country Day Road. Richard was born in Mountain Home, Pennsylvania to the late Harry R. and Arline Heller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan T. Heller.
Richard lived his dream proudly serving as a medic in the United States Air Force. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his patriotism. He protected his country and her allies while serving during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Richard’s valor and skill were recognized with numerous decorations during his 33 years of service. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeant Association, the Non-Commission Officer Association, and the American Legion.
After retirement from the military, Richard worked with the United States Postal Service and retired after 12 years of service.
Richard was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the opportunity to go hunting or fishing with family, friends, or his dog.
A service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, by the graveside at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
Richard is survived by his son, David R. Heller; daughter, Cindy Heller; stepson, Roby Fowler, and wife, Tisha; brothers, David H. Heller and wife, Cheryl, and Charles Heller; and the mother of his children, Pat Heller. He is also survived by his good friend, John Hicks, and wife, JoAnn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Richard’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Wayne County Animal Shelter.
