John G. “Tenny” McCullen, 92, passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, August 3, 2023. He was born in Sampson County, one of nine children, to the late Thomas and Lona Bennett McCullen on June 2, 1931. In addition to his parents, Tenny was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas McCullen, Robert McCullen, Ezra McCullen, and Marvin McCullen; and sisters, Marjorie Joyner, Marie Jernigan, Elease Giddens, and Edna Hargrove.
Working in construction all of his life, Tenny was an accomplished craftsman with an eye for detail. This skill went beyond his work, as his garden and yard displayed equal perfection. He enjoyed working in his yard and garden, no matter the task at hand.
Tenny was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 7, 2023, from 1:00 -2:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Tenny’s life at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Robert Ellis officiating. The interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.
Tenny is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann M. McCullen; daughter, Sheila A. Massey (Kenneth); son, Clark McCullen; grandchildren, Tina Sticklen (C.J. Tynch) and Beth Magnus (Josh); great-grandchildren, James Sticklen and Elizabeth Sticklen; and step-great-grandchildren, Shawn Sticklen and Virginia Tynch.
