Traffic Checkpoint Leads to Pair of Arrests

On August 5, members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office DWI Task Force were assisting at a traffic checkpoint when a vehicle approached with controlled substances in plain view.

After the vehicle was pulled off the roadway, the occupants threw a firearm from the vehicle. The firearm was recovered and an additional firearm was located inside of the vehicle.

Demarshay Witherspoon, 29, was arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (two counts), carrying a concealed handgun, and simple possession of a schedule VI controlled substance. He was placed in the Wayne County jail under a $30,000 secured bond.

Maurice Lewis, 37, was also arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and carrying a concealed handgun. Lewis was placed in the Wayne County jail under a $60,000 secured bond.
