Mary George Rouse, 79, passed away at Cape Fear Valley Health System on July 9, 2023. She was born in Ventura County, California to the late Walter Eugene George and Della Henry George on April 11, 1944. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Russell Rouse; two daughters, Debbie Owens, and Teresa Heikes; and siblings, Margaret Sutton, Larry George, and Shirley Resche.

Family was first and foremost in Mary’s life. Though she treasured her children as precious jewels, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were truly the lights of her life. Her spirits were lifted and her will to live was strengthened each time her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were visiting.

Mary was proud of her Native American heritage and collected indigenous art and jewelry for display and enjoyment in her home. She had an affinity for fashion, especially shoes. Mary was a lifelong learner and constantly craved new knowledge.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Rouse Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation in the hour prior to the service.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Ronda Rouse Dykes, and husband, Johnny; son, Richard “Buckshot” Rouse; step-children, Russell Rogers Rouse, Jr. and Gail Keye; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Shawna, Kassandra, Amanda, Tyler, Tendall, William, Samuel, Vicky, and Daniel; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Phillip George.

Mary was blessed with a “green thumb” and thoroughly enjoyed caring for her houseplants. In lieu of flowers, live plants are welcomed in her memory.
