Davis DeLeon Whitfield, Jr.

July 2, 2023, 78, Goldsboro —

Davis DeLeon Whitfield, Jr., 78, entered into his eternal reward on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. He was born in Lenoir County to the late Davis DeLeon Whitfield and Sybil Haynes Whitfield on May 22, 1945. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert H. Whitfield, and brothers-in-law, James Albert Rouse and Danny Brock.

A patriot at heart, Davis proudly served his country in the United States Military. His career began in the U. S. Navy, followed by time served in the Army National Guard Reserves, and, in 1976, in active duty with the Army National Guard. Davis retired from the armed forces as a Medical Supply Sergeant. Retirement allowed Davis the opportunity of quality time spent with family and many new friendships built at the B & G Grill where he enjoyed many meals.

As a man of strong faith, Davis worshiped at Westwood United Methodist Church for many years and later attended Zion Methodist Church. His love for his church family was only exceeded by his love for the Lord and his own family. Davis was a loving husband, father, and provider. The role he held in prized esteem was that of “Grandpa.”

A connoisseur of classic cars, Davis took pride in owning and driving a Corvette, Mustang, GTO, and Chevelle. Sports were also a priority and source of enjoyment for him, especially as it related to baseball at Rosewood High School. While Davis’s sons attended Rosewood High, he was always active and supportive of the sports program there.

A service of remembrance will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home on Thursday, July 6, 2023, with Pastors Doug Johnson and Janet Balasko officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 p.m. before the service. Interment will take place at Pinelawn Memorial Park on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 10:30 a.m.

Davis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Grady Whitfield; sons, Davis Allen Whitfield and Howard Gregory Whitfield and wife, Amy; grandchildren, Wrenn McCrae Whitfield, Layla Morgan Whitfield, William Davis Whitfield, Sydney Grace Whitfield, and Wesley Allen Whitfield; sister, Jean Whitfield Rouse; sisters-in-law, Lynette Grady Brock and Margaret T.
