Susan High Edgerton

June 1, 2023, 84, Goldsboro –

Susan High Edgerton, 84, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Susan was born in Wilson County on September 30, 1938, to the late Seth E. and Clara Lee Spruill High. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Norman Lee Edgerton, Jr.; twin brother, Seth E. High III; and sister, Lura “B” Regan.

A teacher with Wayne County Public Schools for 30 years, Susan spent most of her time serving the students at Charles B. Aycock High School. After retirement, Susan continued enriching the lives of many, teaching an additional 10 years in the Adult High School at Wayne Community College.

An active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Susan faithfully served her church as an office volunteer and a member of the Altar Guild. Her attention to detail and desire for perfection were valued assets to both ministries.

Constantly involved in the community, Susan was a member of the Jaycettes. She often volunteered with the American Cancer Society and was instrumental in the Wayne County Community Concerts.

Time spent with friends was priceless. Getting together to play bridge was one of her highlights, and the conversation that surrounded the card table was most enjoyable.

The family was always a top priority for Susan, as evidenced by her many acts of care for them. A great mother, she instilled the importance of reading from the very beginning, taking time to read to them every day. When grandchildren came along, she enjoyed every opportunity to do the same for them.

Susan and her husband “Mr. Pirate” enjoyed the ECU Pirate Club and watching the Pirates play football.

The family will greet friends on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the home of Lee and Geoff Hulse, 1513 E. Mulberry Street, Goldsboro. A service to celebrate Susan’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the columbarium of St. Paul Methodist Church with Father David Wyly of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church officiating.

Susan is survived by her daughters, Lura E. Graham and husband Glenn of Morehead City and Lee E. Hulse and husband Geoff of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Hallie Hulse Evans and husband Ben, Catherine Graham Stewart and husband Bronsonz, Rachel Graham, Lura Hulse, and Zach Graham; great-grandchildren, Norman Lee Evans, Blakely Stewart and was anticipating the birth of another great-grandson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews she loved very much including a special niece, Catherine Walsh.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the staff of both Brookdale Berkeley and Gentiva Hospice of Goldsboro. Simple words cannot express our gratitude.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to Literacy Connections, 2001 E. Ash Street, Suite D, Goldsboro, NC 27530, or literacyconnectionsofwaynecounty.org.
