Evelyn Hines Warren

May 16, 2023, 92, Faison –

Life-long Faison area resident, Evelyn Hines Warren, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Countryside Assisted Living and Memory Care Center.

Mrs. Warren was born the ninth of ten children–all girls–to parents, Herbert and Inez Oates Hines.  She grew up on a farm and at a young age, became acquainted with hard work.  She married Kenneth R. “Smutt” Warren on March 12, 1949, and swapped her role as farmer’s daughter to that of farmer’s wife.  She retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier.

After her marriage to Mr. Warren, she joined in membership, the Faison Methodist Church, where she faithfully taught Sunday school for over 50 years.  She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and reading.  Refinishing old oak furniture was a passion for her, and she is remembered for hanging countless rolls of wallpaper.  In her later years, her favorite pastime would be simply sitting on the front porch with her attention heavily engrossed in reading a book.

Mrs. Warren was a practical person.  With the farming way of life all around her, she knew had to do it all.  Saturday nights were often spent dancing at the Moose Lodge with other area couples.  Too, she is remembered as being a die-hard Rebel fan.  Her Friday nights were often consumed on the North Duplin High School campus watching a football game or another in-season sporting event.

Mrs. Warren is survived by her children and spouses, Peggy W. and Carlton Cashwell of Calypso, Kenneth R. “Ken” Warren, Jr. and Gail A. Warren, of Faison, Joe Travis Warren and Peggy Warren of Greenville, and Karen W. Newman and Tom Newman of Grantsboro; a sister, Gwen Jones of Dudley; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren whom she loved very much.  Also left behind are many nieces and nephews who are very special to Aunt Evelyn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Roland “Smutt” Warren, Sr.; and eight sisters, Margaret Scott, Signa Drewry, Kathleen Hatcher, Georgianna Burch, TGheona “Toni” Bumgardner, Melinda Sutton, Herbie Jones, and Sallie Britt.

The life of Mrs. Evelyn Warren will be remembered in graveside rites to be held Friday, May 19, at Noon in the Faison Cemetery.  Officiating will be the Rev. Ashley Summerlin.  Friends may greet the family at the conclusion of the service at the cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to Faison Methodist Church, Box 417, Faison NC 28341
