Curtis Lee Burgess

April 15, 2023, 80, Goldsboro –

Curtis Lee Burgess, 80, departed for his heavenly flight on Saturday, April 15, 2023. Curtis was born in Johnston County to the late Arthur Lee Burgess and Mary Pauline Lee Burgess on August 9, 1942. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Cameron Burgess; sister, Louise Burgess; and brother, Gene Burgess.

It was truly Curtis’ dream to serve his country and fellow man. He proudly served in radar maintenance with the United States Air Force. His considerable intelligence and impeccable sense of humor combined well with his patriotism make him a perfect fit for the Air Force. Through numerous decorations and awards, Curtis’ valor and skill were justly recognized.

Following his military career, Curtis began working with Kidde Aerospace in Wilson before starting the family business, CL Electro Technique. He taught his family the value of hard work and dedication.

Holding high regard for his country, Curtis lived the virtues he was taught as a young boy. He held our nation’s military in the highest regard and believed in supporting our troops, standing for the flag, and being thankful for the freedoms we enjoy.

Actively involved in the ministries of Freedom Baptist Church, Curtis was a man of deep faith who was committed to serving his Lord. His faith in Christ was paramount in his life and shaped his relationships with others. Family was his most prized possession, and he proved this by being the best husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

When Curtis wasn’t working, he could be found enjoying his favorite pastime, watching a good Western movie, or spending time on his computer.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 20, 2023, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Baptist Church, 300 Country Day Road, Goldsboro. A service to celebrate Curtis’ life will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Jonathan Smith officiating. Military honors will follow the service at the church.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Nellie Hollowell Burgess; sons, David Lee Burgess, Curtis Lee Burgess, Jr. and wife, Denise, and Rodney Glenn Burgess and wife, Evie; grandchildren, Michaela Burgess and Ryan Burgess; and sister, Debbie Sasser and husband, Charlie. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Leslie Davis and Lee Davis; and brother-in-law, Willie Hollowell.
