Catherine Kilpatrick Benfield

Catherine Kilpatrick Benfield

April 7, 2023, 88, Sumter –

Catherine Kilpatrick Benfield, 88, passed away in Sumter, South Carolina on Friday, April 7, 2023. Born in Statesville, North Carolina on October 30, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Jack Kilpatrick and Naomi Ruth Menscer Kilpatrick.

Catherine took great pride in being a military spouse. Her late husband, Talton, served faithfully in the United State Air Force, and by his side each step of the way was Catherine. Years later, she worked in the daycare at Faith Christian Academy. Oftentimes, Catherine could be found outside working in her garden. Nothing pleased her more than looking out and seeing the beautiful flowers she had planted and seeing the birds and squirrels throughout her yard searching for some food.

For Catherine, the family was paramount. She loved nothing more than being able to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Catherine will be remembered as a loving Mom, grandmommy, and Gigi.

A service to celebrate Catherine’s life will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at Catherine’s home. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Catherine is survived by her children, Donna Scharadin and husband, Jim of Goldsboro, Ronald Benfield of Goldsboro, Kerrie Mandeville and husband, Paul of Sumter, SC, and Deborah Breedlove and husband, Thomas of Goldsboro; 7 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Catherine is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Jane Jackson.

In addition to her parents, Catherine is preceded in death by her husband, Talton Monroe Benfield; son, Tony Monroe Benfield; and sister, Martha Raymond.
