Craig Sewell, age 81, passed away at Kitty Askins Hospice on April 1, 2023. He was born in Wayne County to Tommy and Louise Sewell on January 6, 1942.

Craig was a wonderful father to his only son, Matt, and loved watching Matt and his friends play various sports. He coached a number of Rosewood youth sports teams that included several of the Holland Hills neighborhood kids. They all loved “Mr. Craig.” He could easily recall the birth dates of family members, close friends, and even their children. Unfortunately, dementia deprived him of this ability.

Craig retired from Cherry Hospital as a pharmacy technician supervisor with 34 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed working at Best and Sauls Men’s Shop for several years. Golfing with his friends, going to NASCAR races, gathering with friends at Bill Moore’s Pool Room, trips to Oriental, and beach trips with his buddies were his favorite pastimes.

Survivors include Craig’s wife of 47 years, Anne Benton Sewell; son, Matt Sewell and wife, Megan, grandsons, Knox and Beck of Wilmington; brother, Charles Sewell, and wife, Sarah of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, Reverend Bruce Benton, and wife, Linda of Sanford; sister-in-law, Barbara Lawson, and husband, Mike of Hyko Lake; nieces, Amy Howard and Ashlee Lawson; nephews, Jeff Sewell and fiance,’ Robyn, Brooke Benton, Blake Benton, and Michael Lawson; and several great nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special thank you to the 3HC staff and all those who made the struggle with dementia less difficult.

A celebration of his life will be held Monday, April 10, 2023, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be directed to a charity of one’s choice.
