William Michael Haswell

March 24, 2023, 78, Goldsboro –

William Michael Haswell, 78, died unexpectedly at Vidant Hospital on Friday, March 24, 2023. He was born in Raleigh to the late William Yancey and Wilda Pierce Haswell on January 19, 1945.

Michael graduated from Broughton High School in Raleigh, Class of 1963. Following graduation, he attended North Carolina State University and graduated with his Bachelor’s degree and later his Masters in Psychology.

Michael served in the Army National Guard as a medic and started working for the State of North Carolina in 1967. He soon met and married Carolyn Kenan in 1978 and they would have celebrated 45 years of marriage this April.

Michael worked for the state for over 30 years and after retirement, started his own private practice in mediation. He then returned to working for the state as the custody mediator for Wayne, Greene, and Lenoir counties in family court.

While in Raleigh, Michael attended Forest Hills Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and chaired numerous committees. He was also a 3rd grade Sunday School teacher for many years. After moving to the Pikeville area, he became a Sunday School teacher at Nahunta Friends and also served as Clerk of the Meeting. Michael never lost his ability to pray beautiful prayers and instilled in his family the need to give back to the church.

Michael is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kenan Haswell, daughters, Corrie Haswell Walston and husband, Turner, of Durham, and Kirsten Haswell Thomas and husband, Allen, of Pikeville; and four grandchildren, Ruth and Lucy Walston and Ava and Lane Thomas.

A service celebrating Michael’s life will be held Thursday, March 30, 2023, at 11:00 am at Nahunta Friends Meeting. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. The interment will be at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2 pm.
