Rodney Wayne Whitley, age 70 crossed the finish line of this earthly life to his eternal rest Friday, March 3, 2023, at UNC Wayne Health. Born in Wilson NC, he was the son of the late Doctor Whitley II and Marcella Whitley.

He was truly gifted with his hands as he was a diesel mechanic for his entire career. There was not much that he could not fix when it came to anything with a diesel engine.

Rodney loved being outdoors. When the chance would arise, you could find him hunting, fishing, and his favorite pastime, racing. He took pride in his bright red race car and never hesitated to show it off every chance he got.

He was known as a family man not only to his family but also to his friends. He loved his wife, children, and remaining family, but there was a special bond between him and his dad. In Rodney’s eyes, his dad could do no wrong.

In addition to his parents, Rodney was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Dana Madison.

Rodney will be fondly remembered by his wife of 32 years, 11 months, and 3 days, Helen Whitley; his daughter, Kimberly Whitley; granddaughter, Brenley Whitley; brothers, Doctor “Doc” Whitley III and wife Pat, Dean Whitley, and wife Brenda; sister, Dawn Stancil; a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

A celebration of Rodney’s life will be held at a later date.
