Ramona Barrow Mitchell

Ramona Barrow Mitchell

March 5, 2023, 84, Goldsboro –

Ramona Barrow Mitchell, 84, stepped into eternity and was greeted by her Lord and the loved ones who had finished their course on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Ramona was born in Lenoir County to the late Ottis P. and Pearl Harrison Barrow on March 13, 1938. Among the many receiving Ramona into the glory of Heaven, she was no doubt quickly embraced by her parents, her daughter, Marla Jaye Mitchell Grady who preceded her in death on June 20, 2022, and Marla’s husband, Richard Matthew Grady, Jr.

Professing her faith and joining with fellow believers of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church on July 21, 1951, Ramona faithfully served her Lord through many ministries of the church. Starting at age 13, she filled many capacities throughout the years. In the music ministry, she served as an organist as well as a pianist for Sunday school and Children’s Church and as a member of the handbell choir. She was a communion steward, a member of the Worship committee, and an assistant in the nursery. Additionally, she served in roles on the Administrative Board and Family Life Committee. Later joining the congregation of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Ramona continued to offer her musical talents as a member of their handbell choir.

A 1956 graduate of New Hope High School (now Eastern Wayne High School School), Ramona continued her education at Guilford College, graduating in 1960 with an AB degree in Elementary Education. Returning home to serve the students of Wayne County, she invested thirty years into the education and nurture of young minds through employment with Wayne County Public Schools. Following retirement, she continued part-time work for Carolina Tobacco Warehouse and E. Carroll Jackson Farms.

Ramona filled her days with the study of family genealogy, doll making, and creating beautiful stained glass. Care for her family and constantly doing for others was her greatest passion. Skilled in sewing, Ramona comforted the hearts of many by creating memory bears for family members of those who lost loved ones. This genuine act of love brought joy to her heart and comfort to those who mourned. Her kind spirit was equally as beautiful as her appearance, for love emanated from her very being.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Ramona’s life at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with Rev. Karl Grant officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2023, in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Ramona is survived by her husband of 62 years, James W. “Jimmy” Mitchell; son, James Clinton “Clint” Mitchell of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Macey Lauren Arrington of Raleigh; sister, Madge Barrow Hicks, and husband, Bill of Raleigh; brother, Donald N. Barrow of Milford, DE; and several nieces and nephews she loved very much.
