Bennie “Rabbit” Howell, Jr. age 83, passed away Friday at his home. Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Bennie and Lillian Durham Howell and the husband of the late Ann Smith Howell. Bennie was a retired Corrections Officer with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by his daughters, Pamela Howell Barwick & husband, Frank and Denise Howell Hollingsworth & husband, David; his sons, Andy Smith & wife, Donna, and James Marlowe; grandchildren, Amber Grady, Kristian Marlowe & fiancé- Josh Edwards, Trenton Marlowe, Jaden Marlowe, Ashley Smith Squires, and Tabitha Smith.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bennie was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank Howell, Jay Howell, Bud Howell, Bessie Howell Holmes, Delma Howell Ingram, Elsie Howell Herring, Renn Howell Sauls Whittaker, Loyce Howell Mihalka, Grace Howell Farfour, and Ester Howell.

A Graveside service, with military honors, will be held Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating.
