Mount Olive Claims 2023 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships

The 2023 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships concluded on Monday afternoon with Mount Olive collecting both the men’s and women’s team titles at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It’s the seventh-straight title for the men’s program while the women claimed back-to-back titles and have now won eight of the last nine indoor crowns.

The Trojan men were led by Field Athlete of the Year Kamden Johnson who tallied 18 points in the championship as he won the high jump with a mark of 2.03m (6-8.0) and placed second in the long jump with a mark of 6.90m (22-7.75).

Joshua Chepkesir was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Year for the second straight season for UNC Pembroke. On Sunday, Chepkesir won the 5,000m (14:48.12) and came back on Monday to finish second in the mile (4:19.55) and capped his final indoor championship with a meet record in the 3,000m with a time of 8:33.79.

Terrique Webb of North Greenville earned men’s Freshman of the Year honors as he won the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.06m (23-2.0), was on the winning men’s 4x400m relay team (3:22.81) and placed sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.90m (6-2.75).

On the women’s side, Kathryn Anderson of UNC Pembroke took home Track Athlete of the Year honors as she won the 3,000m with a time of 10:40.13, placed second in the 5,000m (18:32.74) and women’s distance medley relay (12:50.93) and was third in the mile (5:24.05).

Mycherie Onwuzurukie of Southern Wesleyan repeated as the Field Athlete of the Year as she won long jump with a meet record mark of 5.91m (19-4.75) and placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.57m (37-11.5). She also competed on the championship women’s 4x400m relay team and placed sixth in the 60m.

The women’s Freshman of the Year went to Ruth Spijker of Converse who won the mile (5:14.60), 800m (2:19.32) and anchored the women’s distance medley relay (12:46.36). 

Earl Graves of Mount Olive was named the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year.

Mount Olive won the men’s championship with 146 points while UNC Pembroke placed second with 139. North Greenville finished third with 89 points with Belmont Abbey (48.5) and Southern Wesleyan (46) rounding out the top five.

The Trojan women scored 159 points to win the title with UNC Pembroke second with 102 points. Converse placed third with 74 points while Southern Wesleyan (65) and North Greenville (63) rounded out the top five.
