Bobby Gene Herring was welcomed into his Savior’s arms on January 16, 2023. He was born and raised on his family’s farm in La Grange, Lenoir County to the late Robert Glenn Herring and Ruth Heath Herring on June 3, 1933.

Bobby was married to Lois, the love of his life, for over 63 years. Together, they built a life they loved. Bobby was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather, and wonderful friend. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and retired from the Kinston Fire Department after 26 years and eight months of service. Bobby was a member of Grace Baptist Church and served on the Board of Trustees.

A “jack of all trades”, Bobby especially enjoyed carpentry and cooking. When he wasn’t working or busy with his carpentry work, Bobby loved nothing more than to feel the tug of a fish on the line. He shared his love for freshwater fishing with his grandchildren, and they each enjoyed special fishing trips with him. At the age of 60, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot and enjoyed many years in his Cessna 150 plane in the sky.

A service of love and remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends the hour before the service. Committal at Pinelawn Memorial Park will take place immediately following the service.

Bobby is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Heath Herring; children, Donald Jones (Wanda), Angela Garlinghouse (David), Darlene Waller (Jerry), Glenda Ward (Mike), and Bobbie Murphy (Ryan); grandchildren, Nathan Hollingsworth, Nikki Sutton, Kayla Waller, Trey Ward, Cameron Ward, and Ellie Murphy; great-grandchildren, Anna Hollingsworth, Emma Hollingsworth, and Kent Sutton; siblings, Randal Herring and Trudy Warrington; as well as a longtime friend, Willie “Bubba” Houston.
